Description

The Strada del Menador (Kaiserjägerstraße) has its origins in an old mule track that connects the towns of Caldonazzo (Galnötsch) and Levico Terme in Valsugana with the southern plateau of Lavarone (Monte Rovere, 1,248 metres). The approximately 10-kilometre-long route climbs about 450 metres in altitude.

During the military conflicts between Austria and Italy, this mule track was converted into a military road to supply the numerous military fortifications on and near this plateau. During its construction around 1911, Austria deployed the pioneer units of various Kaiserjäger regiments, a circumstance that contributed to the naming of this road.

The old military road was narrow, unsecured and therefore dangerous to drive on. Around 1960, the road was declared the ‘Strada Provinciale SP133’, further expanded and equipped with edge protections. Although quite narrow in some places, this conversion made the road suitable for public transport.

However, the road continues to be of only local importance; the only aspect worth highlighting is its tourist appeal, which is based on its location and the surrounding landscape.

The road is also known as the ‘Strada del Menador Passo Vezzeni’ and the ‘Strada dell'Alpini’.

The road is located in the Italian province of Trento in the Trentino-South Tyrol region.
