Passo Polentin (Straniger Alm), Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy – by motorcycle and drone

Description

The route over the 1,538-metre-high Passo Polentin connects the northern Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia with the Gailtal valley in Carinthia, Austria. The route begins at a junction about 2 km west of the Passo Cason di Lanza (Lanzen Pass), directly opposite the ‘Al Cippo’ holiday farm, and leads over the ‘green border’ and the ridge of the Carnic Alps to Stranig, which is reached after a total of about 13 km.

Coming from the south, starting with the approach to the pass, the steepest section of the route is on the Italian side. Although some sections are concrete-paved, there is also a lot of loose gravel and narrow, steep hairpin bends. Up to the border, the route then becomes less steep and increasingly easier to ride. The northern, Austrian side is very well-maintained, wide and easy to ride. Shortly after the border, you will find the ‘Straniger Alm’ mountain hut at an altitude of around 1,501 metres.

The Italian southern side of the pass is currently subject to no restrictions. Access to the Austrian northern side is permitted only to authorised persons. However, a sign in the village of Stranig lifts this restriction from 1 July to 15 October, meaning that vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes are also permitted here.

The road is located in the Italian province of Udine, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region.
