Description
The route over the Lötschen Pass (2,684 meters) was once a very important transportation link, connecting the towns of Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland and Goppenstein in the Valais. The northern ascent to the pass led through the Gasterntal (also known as the Gasterental), which is bordered by a steep rocky gorge at the northern end of the valley.
However, when the first of the two railway tunnels under the Lötschberg Pass began construction in 1913, the mountain pass quickly lost its importance. Today, the Gasterntal and the surrounding mountains are a popular destination for day trips and hiking. The valley is about 10 km long and is drained by the Kander River. The lower entrance to the valley, with its steep rocky gorge, lies at an elevation of about 1,350 meters, rising to approximately 1,600 meters at the upper end.
Access to the valley is via a very narrow gravel road carved into the rock. There are also several tunnels to pass through. The necessary one-way traffic is regulated by alternating time slots. An ascent may only begin between minutes 45 and 05; the time slot for a descent is between minutes 15 and 35.
A toll of 15 Swiss francs is required for this road and thus for driving on all gravel roads throughout the Gasterntal valley.
The western approach to the pass road is located in the municipality of Frutigen-Niedersimmental, in the Swiss canton of Bern.
