Description

At an altitude of 2,503 metres, the Umbrail Pass is the highest pass in Switzerland that is open to traffic. The ascent to the pass begins in the north in the village of Santa Maria in the municipality of Val Müstar in the canton of Graubünden and leads along the main road 559 to the pass after about 13.4 km. The ascent involves a climb of about 1,378 metres.

There has been no night-time driving ban on the route, which was completed in 1901, since 2008. The route has been paved throughout since 2015.

The pass summit also marks the border crossing between Switzerland and Italy. The Umbrail Pass does not have its “own” southern ascent, as the road joins the western ascent to the Stelvio Pass a few hundred metres after the border crossing. The Stelvio Pass is only about 3 km away from here; Heading west, the descent then leads to the Italian town of Bormio in the province of Sondrio in Lombardy.

The pass, which is now used almost exclusively as a tourist road, is usually closed from the end of October to the end of May. The exact period is adjusted to the prevailing weather conditions.

The road is located in the municipality of Val Müstair in the Swiss canton of Graubünden.
