Description
The Canyon des Écouges is located on the french balcony road D35, which leads from St. Gervais over the Col de Romeyère to Rencurel. It is located in the department Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes / Isère and there in the mountain massif of the Vercors. The road was built in 1883 as a forest road, but was soon used as a trade road between St. Gervais and Rencurel. In the upper part, the road crosses the river Drevenne, which falls down in two big waterfalls. The river has cut an impressive canyon into the limestone there. In 1954 the ascent and the passage through the canyon was part of the Tour de France. The route at that time still went through the impressive galleries, but since 2009 they have been closed and replaced by a parallel running tunnel. At the upper tunnel exit, however, you can explore some of the galleries on foot and have a magnificent view of St. Gervais and the valley of the Isère.
This route belongs to the so-called "French Balcony Roads".
