Description
The D996 road begins in the west at Le Rozier and leads about 20 km in an easterly direction to Meyrueis through the Gorges de la Jonte, which is up to 450 meters deep. The road always follows the southern flank of the mountain and always the northern side of the Jonte River, which flows into the Tarn at Le Rozier. The gorge forms part of the border between the departments of Lozère and Aveyron. The road is well maintained and easy to drive. Only in two places, where villages are crossed, the speed has to be reduced to 30 km/h in some places. Vultures have been released in this gorge since 1980, so that today a number of these wild birds of prey can be observed here. The Gorges de la Jonte is located in the department of Lozère and here in the region of Occitania.
