Colle del Gran San Bernardo – South, Road SS27, Valle d'Aosta, Piedmont, Italy – by motorcycle

Description

The Great Saint Bernard Pass is 2473 meters high and connects the Italian Aosta Valley in the south with the Swiss town of Martigny in the canton of Valais in the north. The pass is located about 25 km east of the Mont Blanc massif and was already in Roman times one of the most important Alpine passes. The first road was built here already in the 1st century AD. In the 11th century a hostel was built on the pass, which later became the Bernhard Hospice. The pass is closed for several months in winter and therefore not passable. Nevertheless, in order to ensure a reliable connection between northern Italy and Switzerland, an almost 6 km long toll tunnel was built in 1964.

The southern ramp of the pass (SS27) begins north of the Italian town of Aosta and leads after about 20 km to the southern tunnel entrance of the crest tunnel. Here is also the toll station. The road leads through some villages, where it can be a bit narrow, but overall the route is very well developed. However, this part of the route is also often used by trucks, which drive here to the tunnel entrance. Shortly before the toll station and the tunnel entrance, the actual pass road then turns right/north to reach the top of the pass after another 15 km. This section of the road is also well developed and easy to drive on.
