Description
The D159 road leads almost due north from the French municipality of Montbrun-les-Bains to the Col d'Aulan, which is approximately 8.6 km away and around 845 metres high. The Gorge d'Aulan, which was cut into the rock by the river Le Toulourenc, ends after around 6.7 kilometres at the Château d'Aulan, which is well worth seeing. At first, the gorge is still wide and there are some meadows and fields on both sides. Then the gorge becomes narrower and framed by steep and quite high rock faces. The road always follows the bottom of the gorge close to the river. Overall, the road is well constructed and fairly easy to drive on. In some places the road is a little narrow, but oncoming traffic can easily be negotiated with a little care and consideration.
The Gorges d'Aulan (le Toulourenc) gorge is located north-east of Mount Ventoux in the Drôme department and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
This route is one of the so-called "French Balcony Roads".
