Col de la Bonette – South, Road D64, Alpes-Maritimes, Côte-d'Azur, France – by motorcycle

Description

From the village of Saint-Etienne-de-Tinée, the southern ascent to the Col de la Bonnet leads northwards on the D64 road. The entire ascent is around 25 kilometres long and the first half often leads through wooded areas. You also pass the turn-off to Saint-Damlas-le-Selvage and the settlements of Pra and Hameau de Bousiéyas. The landscape then becomes more barren and rocky. The actual pass is a relatively small rocky incision at an altitude of 2715 metres. The pass forms the border between the departments of Alpes-Maritimes in the south and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the north, linking the towns of Saint-Etienne-de-Tinée in the south with Jausiers in the north. At the pass, a summit loop branches off around the Cime de la Bonette, on which an altitude of 2802 metres can ultimately be reached. This makes the summit loop the second highest tarmac road in the Alps. The entire road up to the top of the pass is quite wide, two-lane, very well developed and therefore easy to drive on. The pass itself is dotted with numerous, extensive bunkers. Remains of former barracks can also be found.

The road is located in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the province of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
