Description

The D13 balcony road, which runs almost exactly north-south, connects the towns of Maureillas-las-Illas in the north and Las Illas in the south. The winding road leads for about 10.5 km mostly through cork oak forests east above the river Maureillas. The road is a bit rough and bumpy. But all in all it is easy to drive. Again and again there are views into the valley when the road has been cut out of the rock and lies on retaining walls above the valley floor. The village of Las Illas at the southern end of the road is only about one kilometer from the French-Spanish border, which can be crossed on foot, by bike and possibly by motorcycle via a connecting route that is partly built as a gravel road.

This route belongs to the so-called "French Balcony Roads".
