Description
The Passo dello Stelvio (Stelvio Pass) in the Ortler Alps is the highest paved mountain pass in Italy at an altitude of 2,758 metres and, after the Col de l'Iseran in France, the second highest paved pass in the Alps. The road in its current form was built between 1820 and 1825. However, the road never had any particular economic or military significance. More significant and important were the Umbrail Pass, which branches off to the north about 5 km west of the pass summit, and the Passo Torri di Fraéle (Fraéle Pass) directly north of Bormio.
The pass crossing is about 50 km long in total and connects the valley towns of Bormio (Sondrio, Lombardy) in the south-west and Prad and Trafoi (South Tyrol, Trentino-South Tyrol) in the north-east. On the west side from Bormio, there are 39 hairpin bends to negotiate; on the eastern side from Prad, there are 48 hairpin bends, some of which are narrow and unclear and therefore require increased attention.
The pass crossing is (still) toll-free. However, it is closed in winter from November to May.
The road is located in the Italian province of Sondrio in the Lombardy region.
