Description
The D220 balcony road is located on the northern escarpment of the Romanche River valley between the reservoir at Le Clapier and Lac de Chambon. The road runs parallel to the main road D1091 in east/west direction far above. The road connects the villages of Les Travers and Bons, with the village of Bons also being on the access road to the Deux Alpes ski area. Le Bourg d'Oisans on this main road D1091 from Grenoble to Briançon is the central village in this area. Around this town, in the mountains of the Dauphiné Alps, there are some famous ski resorts (Alpe d'Huez and Deux Alpes for example). The D220 road turns south 2.5 km east of Le Clapier and then heads south and up towards Les Travers and then east towards Bons for just under 3 km. The road is cut out of the rock and passes some overhangs. When two cars meet, one usually has to back up to the next passing place. Otherwise the road is easy to drive on. The road is located in the department of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes / Isère and there in the Dauphiné Alps.
This route belongs to the so-called "French Balcony Roads".
