Les quatre Châteaux de Lastours, Lastours, Aude, Occitanie, France – on foot and with drone

Description

The castles of Lastours are located on the southern side of the "Montagne noir" (black mountains), where various metals, including gold, have been mined since the 2nd century BC. The first mention of fortifications on the castle hill dates back to 1063. The castle hill belonged to the Lords of Cabaret, who had three castles built here from the 11th to the 13th century. The family seat was Château de Cabaret on the northern tip of the mountain. It was followed by Château de Quertinheux on a rocky outcrop to the south of the mountain and then Château de Surdespine (Fleur d'Espine). The lords of Cabaret belonged to the Cathar religious community and the castles were therefore besieged several times. During the Albigensian Crusade (1209 – 1229), the last lords Pierre-Roger de Cabaret and his brother Jourdain had to abandon the besieged castle complex. The fourth castle, the Tour Régine, was not built until 1260 under the rule of the Catholic, northern French kings.

The four castles of Lastours are located on a mountain directly north of the village of Lastours on the southern foothills of the Montagne noir (Black Mountains). Lastours is located about 15 km north of the large city of Carcassone in the Aude département in the Occitanie region.
