Gotthardpass – Tremola, Leventina, Tessin, Switzerland – by motorcycle and drone

Description

Although the Gotthard Pass (named after Godehard of Hildesheim) could be crossed in early times, its true significance as a transport artery only began with the opening up of the Schöllenen Gorge near Andermatt in the 13th century. From this time onwards, the 2,091-meter-high pass became increasingly important both regionally and nationally.

The mule tracks previously used between Andermatt and Airolo were replaced between 1827 and 1832 by a fully developed road connection. This also led to the creation of the road through the Val Tremola, which covers a distance of approximately 4 km and climbs about 300 meters in altitude with 24 hairpin bends.

In 1922, the first post bus traveled on this route over the pass, replacing the stagecoach service that had been used until then. In 1882, the Gotthard railway tunnel was opened, and with the construction of another road and then the tunnel for the A2 motorway, the old road through the Val Tremola lost its importance.

Today, the Tremola ascent has been well restored and is passable again, as it is Switzerland's “longest road construction monument.” The Tremola is still driven on its original cobblestone surface, and you should be very careful here, especially in wet conditions.

The ascent to the pass through the Val Tremola is located in the municipality of Leventina in the Swiss canton of Ticino.
