Description

On the north side of the Gorges du Nan, the balcony road D22 connects the towns of Cognin les Gorges and Malleval-en-Vercors. The route is about 10 km long and has an altitude difference of about 650 meters. The gorges are located in the department Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes / Isère and there in the massif of Vercors. The old road to Malleval-en-Vercors passes through the bottom of the gorge, but was severely endangered there by rock falls, floods and landslides. So both municipalities decided to rebuild the road, with parts of the route being blasted out of the rock much further up. This new road was completed around 1880 and is today a driving and scenic attraction for every motorcyclist.

This route belongs to the so-called "French Balcony Roads".
