Description
The D934 Balcony Road runs north-south over the Col du Portalet and connects France and Spain. The Col du Portalet forms the border between these two countries. The road begins in the French town of Laruns and first leads through the Gorges du Hourat. First there is a tunnel and then the road runs past steep rock faces. To the right below lies the Hourat River. At one point the rock face is such that a lateral bridge had to be built to cross this section. However, this bridge does not cross the river. Further up, the river is dammed and used to generate electricity. The actual gorge ends at Les Eaux Chaudes, but the route continues south along the river. You pass through some wooded areas, although the vegetation becomes more and more sparse higher up. All in all, the road is easy to drive on with due caution. The road is located in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
This route belongs to the so-called "French Balcony Roads".
