Description
West of the Italian village of Bardonecchia in the upper Susa Valley, in the Cottian Alps, lies the 2,805-meter-high Monte Jafferau, on which a summit fort was built at the end of the 19th century. There are other military fortifications on this mountain massif (e.g., Forte Föens, Forte al Seguret, Forte Pramand, and Forte Fenil), all of which are connected by a network of military roads. This means there are four routes up to the summit fort on Mont Jafferau.
1. This access road uses the supply routes of the ski area on the west side of Mont Jafferau and is the shortest but also the steepest. In good weather, the route is easily passable uphill. Downhill and in bad weather, the route can be challenging. The route starts at the Hotel “Savoia Mountain Resort” about 7 km east above Bardonecchia.
2. Shortly before the Savoia Mountain Resort hotel, about 7 km east of Bardonecchia, the access road to Forte Föens branches off in a left-hand hairpin bend. After about 4.5 km, the road passes Forte Föens and continues westward. After another 7.5 km, you reach Col Basset.
3. From the village of Savoulx, a fairly steep and winding serpentine road leads north up the mountain. After about 11.5 km, you reach the junction between Forte Föens and Col Basset, which is another 6 km away.
4. From Fenils (Forte Fenil), a village northeast of Salbertrand, a military road initially leads towards Colle del Pramand. However, the road then continues north past Forte Pramand. You will come to the 850-meter-long Galleria del Seguret and then Forte al Seguret. From here, continue on to Col Basset, which you will reach after a total of about 17 km.
On the western side of Monte Jafferau, there is an extensive ski area that is accessible via several ski lifts and service facilities. In order to supply and maintain these facilities, a road has been built that provides access to all of these stations. This road starts at the Hotel “Savoia Mountain Resort” and leads to Forte Jafferau at the summit. The road is just over 5 kilometers long.
On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays, and all public holidays, motor vehicles are prohibited from driving up to Forte Jafferau. The ban applies to access roads 1 and 2 from the Savoia Mountain Resort hotel. Access from Savoulx is completely prohibited on these days, and the fourth access road is prohibited from the junction to Forte Pramand. Access to Forte Jafferau is therefore only permitted on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Access road 4 described here is approximately 22 km long and easy to drive both uphill and downhill. Only the passage through the Galleria del Seguret, an 850-meter-long unlit tunnel, requires some concentration and caution.
The road is located in the Italian province of Turin, in the Piedmont region.
