Fort de Buoux, Apt, Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France – by foot and drone

Description

About 1.5 km south of the village of Buoux in the north of the Grand-Luberon mountain range, the medieval fortress "Fort de Buoux" is located on a rocky promontory about 500 meters long and difficult to access. The place was already settled in prehistoric times. Celts and Romans also built fortifications because an important trade route through the Luberon could be controlled here. From the 13th century the place was developed into a medieval castle. In the lower part, a defensive wall protected a small medieval village where rock shelters, storage silos, a large cistern and a Romanesque chapel can also be found. Further up, three bastions and a watchtower built on Roman foundations protected the village. A secret staircase is also part of the fortifications of the castle. The fortress was considered impregnable at the time. Around 1660, however, the castle was demolished by King Louis XIV and fell into disrepair. Since 1989, the site has been listed as a historical monument.
