Description
In 1890, a military road was built over the 2178 metre-high Colle delle Finestre to enable faster troop movements between the northern Susa Valley and the southern Chisone Valley. This created a direct link between the villages of Meana di Susa in the north and the small village of Depot in the south, which lies on the SP23R road.
Until 2005, the old military road was in poor condition. Then the route became part of the ‘Giro d'Italia’ cycle race for the first time. To this end, the road was extensively renovated, largely tarmaced and incorporated into the official Italian road network under the designation SP172. The south side of the pass road is fully tarmaced and generally easy to drive on. On the north side, the approx. 16 km long ascent to the pass begins as a very winding tarmac road. After about half the distance, you reach ‘Colletto di Meana’ at 1452 metres, where the asphalt road changes to a well-maintained dirt and gravel road. In dry conditions, this section of the route is also easy to ride. If it is wet, however, the high clay content can quickly make the road very slippery.
The pass is subject to a general winter closure from 1 November to 31 May. In addition, the pass is closed to motorised vehicles on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 09:00 to 17:00. The route may also be closed due to various cycling events.
The junction to the Assietta ridge road is located on the southern approach to the Colle delle Finestre. Just like the Assietta ridge road, the Colle delle Finestre is also located in the Parco naturale Orseira – Rocciavrè nature reserve and is therefore subject to similar rules.
The road is located in the Italian province of Torino in the Piedmont region.
