Colle del Piccolo San Bernardo – North, Road SS26, Valle d'Aosta, Piedmont, Italy – by motorcycle

Description

The Little Saint Bernard Pass is 2188 metres high and connects the French valley of the Isère in the department of Savoie / Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in the south with the Italian Aosta Valley in the north. This mountain crossing was already an important trade route in the times of the Celts and Romans. In the 11th century, a hospice was built on the top of the pass by Bernhard von Menthon. Today's pass road is based on a road construction project carried out in the 19th century by Napoleon III of France. The pass forms the border between France and Italy, which was also heavily contested here during the Second World War. Today there is a cross-border winter sports area here, which stretches from the Italian winter sports resort of La Thuile in the north to the French resort of La Rosière in the south. The road over the pass is closed in winter.

The northern ramp starts in the Italian village of Pre-Saint-Didier and leads through the winter sports resort of La Thuile until you reach the top of the pass after about 23 km. The road is very well maintained and easy to drive on. It should be noted that various speed limits apply along the entire route, which are also checked frequently.
