Col du Grand Saint-Bernard – North, Road 21, Martigny, Valais, Swiss – by motorcycle

Description

The Great Saint Bernard Pass is 2473 metres high and connects the Italian Aosta Valley in the south with the Swiss town of Martigny in the canton of Valais in the north. The pass lies around 25 kilometres east of the Mont Blanc massif and was already one of the most important Alpine passes in Roman times. The first road was built here in the 1st century AD. An inn was built on the pass in the 11th century, which later became the St Bernard Hospice from which it takes its name. The pass is closed for several months in winter and is therefore impassable. To ensure a reliable connection between northern Italy and Switzerland, an almost 6 km long toll tunnel was built in 1964.

The northern ramp of the pass (21) begins south of the Swiss town of Martigny and after around 37 km leads to the northern tunnel entrance of the summit tunnel. The toll station is located on the southern/Italian side of the tunnel. The road leads through a few villages where it can get a little narrow, but overall the route is very well developed. However, this part of the route is also often used by lorries, which drive up to the tunnel entrance. Shortly before the tunnel entrance, the actual pass road then turns off to the right/south to reach the top of the pass after a further 7 kilometres. This section of the road is also well developed and easy to drive on.
