Description

Since 1882, a road tunnel running under the Col de Tende has connected the French Roya Valley in the south with the Italian region of Cuneo in the north. As a result, the pass road on the southern ascent to the Col de Tende was little used, little maintained and eventually completely closed to public traffic.

When storm ‘Alex’ devastated the Roya Valley at the beginning of October 2020, among other places, the southern / French access to the tunnel via the D6204 road was severely damaged or destroyed. It was no longer possible to use the tunnel, as extensive repairs, including the construction of a new bridge, which are expected to last until 2025, are necessary.

In order to give the local population the opportunity to cross the pass, the old pass access road was repaired, partially resurfaced and made accessible again in 2-hour alternating traffic. The road is very narrow, can only be driven on in one lane and is only permitted for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes. There are a total of 46 hairpin bends (Route des 46 Lacets) to negotiate along the entire ascent, some of which are very narrow and require some skill. In the upper third of the route, the carriageway consists of coarse concrete, which is covered in dust and stones and should be driven on with particular care.

The road is located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and there in the Alpes-Maritimes / Maritime Alps.
