Col de la Cayolle – South, Balcony Road D2202, Maritime Alps, France – by motorcycle

Description

The drive up the Col de la Cayolle shown here starts in the village of Saint-Martin-d'Entraunes and leads on the D2202 balcony road after a total of about 21 km to the top of the pass at an altitude of 2326 metres. The first half of the route is wide, very well built and easy to drive. You pass through the villages of Entraunes and Estenc, whereby the road becomes steeper and narrower from Estenc onwards for the last 7 km to the pass. The road here also leads through some tunnels, past rock faces and over the precipice on partly very high retaining walls. Watch out for oncoming traffic, as it is often difficult to find passing places. The road itself is a little bumpy, but still easy to drive on if you are careful. The northern descent after the pass then leads through the Gorges du Bachelard to Barcelonnette. The southern ascent to the Col de la Cayolle is in the Alpes Maritimes department and there in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region.

This route belongs to the so-called "French Balcony Roads".
